When temperatures plunge, your home's plumbing system faces a real test. Frozen pipes, water heater strain, and unnoticed leaks can turn into costly emergencies fast. At JR Snider Water Care & Plumbing, we've helped Northern Virginia homeowners stay comfortable through decades of cold winters - and we're sharing our top expert tips to help you do the same.

At JR Snider Water Care & Plumbing, we’ve seen it all — from frozen outdoor faucets that burst overnight to water heaters pushed to their limits during a cold snap. But here’s the good news: with a little preparation and professional care, you can keep your plumbing running efficiently and your home protected all winter long.

Below, our experts share the best ways to winter-proof your plumbing system before the next cold front hits:

Protect Your Pipes This Winter

When temperatures drop, protect your pipes from freezing and bursting!
Insulate exposed pipes in crawl spaces, basements, and attics to keep them warm.
Open cabinet doors under sinks to let warm air circulate, and let faucets drip slightly on frigid nights to keep water moving.

Pro tip: Even a small trickle of water can prevent major damage and expensive repairs later on.

Keep Winter From Wreaking Havoc on Your Plumbing!

Disconnect and drain all outdoor hoses, and shut off water to exterior faucets.
This simple step prevents leftover water from freezing in the line — a leading cause of burst pipes that can lead to major water damage and costly repairs.

If possible, install insulated faucet covers on outdoor spigots for an extra layer of protection.

Service Your Water Heater

Your water heater works extra hard in the winter months. Flushing the tank removes sediment buildup that reduces efficiency.
If your system is older or struggling to keep up, a JR Snider technician can inspect it and recommend whether maintenance or replacement is the best option.

Maintain a Steady Indoor Temperature

Even when you’re away, keep your thermostat set no lower than 55°F.
A consistent indoor temperature prevents hidden pipes behind walls or under floors from freezing solid.

Know Where Your Main Shut-Off Valve Is

If a pipe bursts, you’ll want to shut off your water immediately.
Locate your main shut-off valve and make sure everyone in your household knows how to use it — it can save you thousands in damage.

Schedule a Winter Plumbing Inspection

Before freezing temperatures set in, schedule a JR Snider plumbing inspection.
Our licensed technicians will check your pipes, water heater, and overall system for weak points — helping you prevent emergencies before they start.

Stay Ahead of Winter’s Chill with JR Snider

Winter plumbing problems are avoidable with a little preparation and professional care.
If you suspect a leak, see slow drainage, or want peace of mind before the deep freeze hits, we’re here to help.

Low Water Pressure? Here's What Might Be Going On

There's nothing more frustrating than stepping into the shower and getting hit with a weak trickle of water-or waiting forever to fill a sink or bathtub. If you're dealing with low water pressure, you're not alone. It's one of the most common plumbing issues homeowners in Northern Virginia face.

At JR Snider Plumbing, we’ve helped hundreds of customers restore strong, steady water pressure—and in most cases, it’s easier to fix than you think. Let’s break down the most common causes and how to handle them.

1. Buildup in Your Pipes

Over time, minerals from hard water (especially in our region) can accumulate in your pipes, narrowing the passageways and restricting flow. It’s like plaque in arteries—eventually, water can barely get through.

✅ Solution: A professional pipe inspection and cleaning can remove buildup and restore flow. In some cases, repiping sections of your home may be the best long-term fix.

2. A Partially Closed Shut-Off Valve

If you’ve recently had work done or a water emergency, someone may have partially closed the main water valve or a fixture shut-off without realizing it.

✅ Solution: Check the main valve (usually near the water meter or where the main line enters your home) and make sure it’s fully open. Same goes for individual fixture valves.

3. Pressure Regulator Problems

Some homes have a water pressure regulator that ensures pressure stays within safe limits. When these regulators fail, they can drop pressure too low—or cause it to spike dangerously high.

✅ Solution: Have a licensed plumber test and replace the pressure regulator if needed. It's a quick fix that can make a huge difference.

4. Leaks in the Plumbing System

A hidden leak not only wastes water—it also reduces pressure throughout your home. If your pressure has slowly declined or your water bill is creeping up, a leak might be to blame.

✅ Solution: JR Snider Plumbing offers leak detection services using advanced technology to locate and repair leaks without tearing up your home.

5. Municipal Supply Issues

Sometimes the problem isn’t in your home—it’s in your neighborhood. Construction, water main breaks, or even peak demand times can reduce water pressure temporarily.

✅ Solution: Call your local water supplier to check for known issues. If the problem persists and no outside issues are reported, call us to take a closer look inside your home.

6. Old, Corroded Pipes

If you live in an older home, your plumbing system may simply be outdated. Galvanized steel pipes, common in homes built before the 1960s, are especially prone to corrosion and clogging.

✅ Solution: A full or partial repiping can dramatically improve pressure and water quality. JR Snider Plumbing can walk you through the process, costs, and benefits.

💧 Don’t Settle for a Weak Shower

You deserve strong, reliable water pressure in every part of your home. If you’re dealing with dribbles instead of flow, let the pros at JR Snider Plumbing diagnose the issue and get things back to normal—fast.

📞 Ready to Boost Your Water Pressure?
Call JR Snider Plumbing today or schedule a pressure check online.
As the leaves begin to change and the air gets crisp in Northern Virginia, most homeowners start thinking about raking, heating, and holiday prep. But fall is also the perfect time to give your plumbing some attention before freezing temperatures arrive.

At JR Snider Plumbing, we know that winter can be hard on your pipes, fixtures, and water systems. With a little fall maintenance, you can avoid expensive repairs and enjoy a worry-free season.

Here are six essential fall plumbing tips to help you prepare your home before winter sets in:

1. Disconnect and Drain Outdoor Hoses

Leaving hoses connected during a freeze can cause water to back up into the faucet and freeze — leading to a burst pipe.
✅ What to do: Disconnect, drain, and store all garden hoses. If possible, shut off the water supply to outdoor spigots and use insulated faucet covers for extra protection.

2. Check Your Outdoor Faucets

Dripping outdoor faucets are a red flag. If there's even a small leak, water can freeze and expand, causing pipes to crack.
✅ What to do: Test each faucet and look for drips or leaks. If you notice anything unusual, it’s best to get it checked before the first freeze.

3. Insulate Exposed Pipes

Pipes in unheated areas like basements, crawl spaces, and garages are most vulnerable to freezing.
✅ What to do: Use pipe insulation or heat tape to wrap exposed plumbing. It’s an inexpensive fix that can save you thousands in damage.

4. Flush Your Water Heater

Over time, sediment builds up in your water heater, reducing efficiency and possibly causing damage. Fall is a great time to flush it out before winter demand increases.
✅ What to do: You can DIY this or call us to do a full inspection and flush. You’ll extend the life of your heater and improve energy efficiency.

5. Test Your Sump Pump

Heavy fall rains and melting snow can lead to basement flooding.
Why You Shouldn't Use Chemical Drain Cleaners (And What to Do Instead)

When your sink clogs or your shower drains slowly, it's tempting to grab a bottle of chemical drain cleaner and call it a day. After all, they promise a quick fix-and who doesn't love that? But while these products might seem like a good idea in the moment, they can do more harm than good.

At JR Snider Plumbing, we’ve seen firsthand how store-bought drain cleaners can damage plumbing systems, shorten the life of pipes, and lead to bigger problems down the road. Here’s why you should think twice before reaching for that bottle—and what you should do instead.

1. They’re Harsh on Your Pipes

Chemical drain cleaners work by using highly corrosive substances (like lye or sulfuric acid) to break down clogs. The problem? Those same chemicals don’t stop at the clog—they can also eat away at your pipes. Over time, repeated use can cause pipe corrosion, leaks, and even full pipe failure, especially in older homes with metal piping.

2. They Can’t Fix the Root Problem

A chemical may clear out a bit of grease or hair, but it won’t resolve more serious issues like:

Tree roots invading your sewer line

Pipe misalignment

Deep blockages or buildup in the main drain

Using chemical cleaners repeatedly is often like putting a band-aid on a broken bone—it might mask the problem, but it won’t solve it.

3. They’re Hazardous to Your Health

Drain cleaners can release toxic fumes, especially in enclosed spaces like bathrooms. Accidental contact with skin or eyes can cause serious burns, and improper use can damage septic systems. Plus, they’re extremely dangerous to children and pets.

4. They’re Harmful to the Environment

After you flush those chemicals down your drain, they eventually make their way into the water system. Many of these substances don’t break down easily and can harm aquatic life and disrupt ecosystems. Not exactly the “clean” you’re hoping for.

What to Do Instead: Safer & Smarter Drain Cleaning

✅ Try Natural Solutions First:
For minor clogs, a mixture of baking soda and vinegar followed by hot water can sometimes help. Or use a drain snake or plunger to manually remove blockages.

✅ Use Enzyme-Based Cleaners:
These cleaners use natural bacteria or enzymes to break down organic materials like food or hair. They’re slower acting but far safer for your pipes and the environment.

✅ Call a Professional (That’s Us!)
If the clog persists or happens repeatedly, it’s time to call JR Snider Plumbing. We use professional-grade equipment like video inspections and hydro jetting to safely clear your pipes and prevent future problems—no guesswork, no damage.

🚫 Ditch the Chemicals. Call the Experts.

A slow drain shouldn’t lead to costly repairs down the line. If you’re dealing with stubborn clogs, let JR Snider Plumbing take care of it the right way—quickly, safely, and professionally.

5 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Water Heater

Your water heater works quietly in the background-until it doesn't. Most homeowners don't think about their water heater until the morning shower goes cold, or worse, there's water pooling around the base of the unit. The truth is, water heaters don't last forever, and knowing when to replace yours can save you from cold showers and costly emergencies.

At JR Snider Plumbing, we help homeowners throughout Northern Virginia spot the signs of water heater trouble early. Here are five warning signs it might be time to replace yours:

1. It’s Over 10 Years Old

Most traditional tank water heaters last 8–12 years with proper maintenance. If yours is pushing that limit, it’s smart to start planning for a replacement—especially if it’s showing other symptoms. A newer unit will be more energy efficient, saving you money over time.

2. Rust-Colored Water

Notice brown or rusty water when you turn on the hot tap? That could be a sign your water heater is rusting from the inside. Left unchecked, rust can eat through the tank, leading to leaks or full-on tank failure. If you see this, it’s time to give us a call.

3. Strange Noises

Popping, banging, or rumbling noises from your water heater aren’t normal. These sounds often come from sediment build-up in the tank. Over time, sediment hardens and forces your heater to work harder—reducing efficiency and increasing the chance of damage.

4. Leaks Around the Base

A puddle near the water heater is never a good sign. Even small leaks could point to a crack in the tank—a problem that usually can’t be repaired. If you spot water where it shouldn’t be, shut off your unit and contact us right away.

5. Inconsistent or Cold Water

If your hot water runs out quickly or fluctuates in temperature, your heater might be on its last legs. Heating elements wear out over time, and while a repair might be possible, it often makes more sense to invest in a new, energy-efficient model—especially if your unit is already aging.

Upgrade Before It Becomes an Emergency

Replacing your water heater on your terms—before it fails—gives you time to choose the right system for your home and budget. Whether you're looking for a traditional tank model or want to explore tankless water heaters, JR Snider Plumbing has the experience to guide you through every step.

The Hidden Costs of Ignoring Small Plumbing Leaks

It's just a drip, right? You hear it at night or see the occasional drop under the sink, and you think, "I'll get to it later." But here's the truth: what starts as a small leak can quickly turn into a big problem-and an even bigger expense.

At JR Snider Plumbing, we’ve seen it all. And if there’s one thing we’ve learned over the decades serving Northern Virginia, it’s that plumbing issues don’t fix themselves. Let’s break down the hidden costs of ignoring small leaks and why early action can save you thousands.

1. Skyrocketing Water Bills

A single dripping faucet can waste over 3,000 gallons of water per year. That’s not just bad for the environment—it’s bad for your wallet. Water rates may not seem steep month to month, but over time, a leak adds up fast. A small fix now could save you from paying for gallons you never even used.

2. Structural Damage to Your Home

Water doesn’t just sit still. It seeps. And if a leak goes unnoticed behind a wall, under a floor, or in the ceiling, you could be looking at mold, rot, and damage to drywall, wood, or insulation. What could have been a $200 repair turns into a $2,000 renovation project.

3. Mold and Mildew Growth

Moisture is the perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew, which thrive in dark, damp areas like basements and behind walls. Besides the structural concerns, mold can lead to serious health issues, especially for those with allergies or asthma. A minor leak left unchecked could impact your family’s air quality and well-being.

4. Lower Home Value

If you’re thinking about selling your home someday, even minor plumbing issues can raise red flags during inspections. Buyers and agents notice signs of leaks—water stains, musty smells, low water pressure—and they may lower their offer accordingly or walk away entirely.

5. Increased Emergency Repair Costs

Plumbing emergencies don’t happen at convenient times. When that "small" leak turns into a burst pipe at 2 AM, you're dealing with after-hours emergency fees, potential water damage, and a major disruption to your daily life.

Don’t Wait—Fix It Right the First Time

At JR Snider Plumbing, we believe in proactive plumbing care. Our licensed professionals can quickly identify the source of a leak and recommend the best solution before it becomes a costly problem.
For many farms in Northern Virginia, septic systems are just as important as water wells and irrigation. With multiple barns, houses, and outbuildings relying on them, a septic issue can quickly disrupt daily operations. At JR Snider, we help farmers keep their septic systems running smoothly to avoid costly repairs and protect the land.

Why Septic Systems Are Different on Farms

Higher demand: Farms often have more people, livestock facilities, and equipment wash stations tied into one system.

Heavy water use: Irrigation and daily farm operations put extra strain on the drain field.

Equipment traffic: Tractors and heavy machinery can compact soil around septic fields, reducing effectiveness.

Waste variety: Beyond household waste, some farms deal with runoff and organic byproducts that impact system health.

Protect the Drain Field
Avoid driving or storing heavy equipment on the drain field to prevent soil compaction.

Manage Water Wisely
Spread out water use where possible to avoid overwhelming the system.

Watch What Goes Down
Keep chemicals, oils, and non-biodegradable items out of drains—they can disrupt natural breakdown.

Schedule Inspections
Professional checks catch small issues (like tree root intrusion or slow drainage) before they become emergencies.

Pump inefficiencies causing uneven water pressure

Seasonal stress from freezing winters and heavy summer use

These issues can impact crop growth, increase costs, and put unnecessary strain on your equipment.

For farmers in Loudoun County and across Northern Virginia, water is the backbone of the operation. From irrigation and livestock care to cleaning equipment and processing crops, a reliable water system is non-negotiable. At JR Snider, we specialize in helping farms manage, maintain, and protect their plumbing and water treatment systems.

Challenges Farms Face with Water Systems

Well performance: Farms often rely on well water, which must be properly maintained to handle high demand.

Sediment and hard water: Minerals and sediment can clog pipes, damage pumps, and reduce equipment lifespan.

Seasonal stress: Hot summers and cold winters both put added pressure on irrigation lines and well pumps.

High water usage: Farms use exponentially more water than homes, meaning small inefficiencies can add up to big costs.

Best Practices for Farm Plumbing

Water Treatment Solutions
Filtration systems can remove sediment, iron, and minerals that damage plumbing and affect water quality for crops and livestock.

Upgrade to Smart Controls
Automated water management systems allow you to monitor flow, pressure, and performance remotely—saving both water and money.

Protect Irrigation Lines
Drain and service irrigation systems seasonally to prevent leaks and clogs.

Emergency Preparedness
Have a trusted plumbing partner (like JR Snider!) who can respond quickly if a well pump or major line goes down.

One of the most critical systems to safeguard is your water supply, which keeps livestock healthy, irrigation flowing, and equipment running. At JR Snider, we understand the special plumbing needs of farms, and we’re here to help you prepare for winter.

Why Farm Plumbing Needs Extra Care

Unlike residential homes, farms often rely on:

Exposed water lines for barns, troughs, and irrigation.

Well systems that supply water to both the home and outbuildings.

Large-capacity pipes and tanks that are harder to insulate and maintain.

These systems are vital to daily operations. A frozen pipe or pump failure can quickly lead to animal stress, crop damage, or costly downtime.

Winter Plumbing Tips for Farmers

Insulate exposed lines: Wrap pipes in barns, stables, and outdoor hydrants with foam insulation or heat tape.

Protect water troughs: Use heated troughs or tank de-icers to ensure livestock always have access to fresh water.

Check your well system: Schedule a professional inspection to confirm your pump and pressure tank are in top shape before freezing temps hit.

Drain unused lines: Shut off and drain irrigation or field lines that won’t be used until spring.

Backup planning: Consider a generator for critical water systems in case of power outages.

Emergency Preparedness

If you notice reduced water pressure or frozen lines, act quickly. Keep barns warm where possible, and use safe heating methods (like heat lamps or insulated wraps) on vulnerable lines. Never use an open flame—it’s a fire hazard, especially around hay and livestock.

Why Farmers Trust JR Snider

Our team understands the unique needs of agricultural water systems and provides prompt, reliable service—whether it’s a burst pipe in the barn or a well pump emergency.

The existing system is about 15 years old and the whole‑house filter has been bypassed, contributing to poor water quality. A tankless unit would require checking supply water hardness, ensuring proper fuel source (gas, propane, or electric), confirming adequate venting and gas line or electrical service, and installing pre‑treatment (filter or softener) to protect the unit from scale or sediment damage. Tankless Options provided for the customer to review.

Few things are more frustrating than waking up to a cold shower. Your water heater is one of the hardest-working appliances in your home, and when it starts to fail, it can throw your entire household off balance. At JR Snider, we know the signs to look for-and when it's time to consider a replacement.

1. Inconsistent or Cold Water

If your water runs hot and cold or never gets hot enough, your heater may be struggling to keep up. While small adjustments or repairs can sometimes fix the issue, frequent temperature problems usually signal a bigger problem.

2. Age of the Unit

Most water heaters last 8–12 years with proper care. If yours is nearing that range (or older), it’s a good idea to plan ahead for replacement before you’re left without hot water at all.

3. Rusty or Discolored Water

Rust-colored hot water may indicate corrosion inside the tank. This often means the tank is deteriorating from the inside out—a clear sign replacement is needed.

4. Strange Noises

Popping, banging, or rumbling sounds are caused by sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank. Over time, this buildup reduces efficiency, forces the heater to work harder, and shortens its lifespan.

5. Leaks Around the Tank

Water pooling around the base of your water heater is a warning sign you shouldn’t ignore. Leaks often mean the tank has cracked and needs to be replaced immediately to avoid water damage.

Why Choose JR Snider for Your Water Heater Needs?

Why Pipes Freeze

When temperatures drop below freezing, water inside exposed pipes can freeze, expand, and rupture the pipe. This often happens in unheated areas like attics, crawl spaces, basements, or outdoor spigots.

It's easy to ignore your drains-until water won't go down. But by the time you're standing ankle-deep in your shower or dealing with a sink backup, the problem has already grown. At JR Snider, we recommend regular drain cleaning as one of the smartest investments you can make for your home. Here's why.

Prevents Major Blockages

Everyday items—hair, soap scum, food particles, grease—slowly build up inside your pipes. Left unchecked, these create stubborn clogs that can completely block water flow. Routine cleaning clears buildup before it becomes a major headache.

Protects Your Plumbing System

Clogs don’t just stop water—they put stress on your pipes. Over time, pressure from blockages can cause cracks, leaks, or even burst pipes. A simple drain cleaning now can save you from costly plumbing repairs later.

Improves Home Hygiene

Clogged drains often lead to foul odors and bacteria growth. Regular cleaning helps keep your home fresh, safe, and sanitary.

Saves on Water & Energy Bills

Blocked pipes make your plumbing system work harder. This means reduced efficiency in appliances like dishwashers and washing machines, which can increase energy costs. Clean drains = smoother water flow = lower bills.

Peace of Mind

Plumbing problems always pop up at the worst time—during holidays, gatherings, or busy weeks. Regular drain maintenance keeps things flowing so you can focus on what matters most.

At JR Snider, we use safe, effective methods to keep your drains clear—no harsh chemicals, just professional solutions that protect your pipes.

We first started by updating the aging pressure tank. We then addressed the heavy amounts of iron by installing a new Water Care “Ion Air Cat” Iron Filtration system. We then installed a specialized water softener (Total Care Elite) that is not only capable of addressing the hard water but also has the capability of slightly raising a lower pH. This allowed us to address two issues with one unit. This saved the customer money by addressing all of the issues with only two units instead of the three that would normally be needed.

We first removed the misapplied unit and installed a new Water Care “Ion Air Cat” to remove the large amounts of iron in the water. Due to heavy sediment coming out of the well we proceeded the unit with a large cartridge filter. We then relocated, rearranged, and repiped the ultraviolet light and its pre-filter so that it would function properly. This job allowed us to update and improve the overall quality of water while reusing several existing components saving the customer equipment costs.

After thinking things over he decided that installing a new and far more efficient unit was in his best interests. The next day we arrived to remove the old system and install the new one. The new unit was a Water Care 1054 “Care Soft Elite” water softener which had the capabilities of connecting to the customer's WiFi. This allows the customer to monitor the system from his phone and will notify him if he runs out of salt or if the unit detects an issue. The customer also asked us to install a cartridge filter to prevent any sediment from entering the plumbing system.

We explained how we could replace the existing gas line with a larger one and that would then in turn allow us to upgrade the size of the heater. Also that several changes needed to be made when the new heater is installed to bring everything up to recent code requirements. After pricing out all of the options he decided that the additional work was worth it to bring the system up to code and provide more hot water for his family.

We started by pulling a permit and increasing the gas line size from the manifold to the heater. We then bonded the gas system per new code requirements. We then installed a new 75-gallon gas heater in an emergency pan. We added a new 5-gallon expansion tank (per code) as the older heater did not have one installed. We filled and fired up the heater and tested all of our work. We then had the installation inspected by the local plumbing inspector.

While on-site we installed a three-stage cartridge filter that the customer had previously bought.

Immediately after closing we delivered the equipment to her new home and began installation. We installed a new pressure tank with new tank-T and components. The first piece of water treatment installed was a Water Care 1354 “Clear Care Pro” acid neutralizer. This unit is filled with a sacrificial media designed to raise the pH of the acidic well water to levels that will no longer damage the plumbing system. The second unit installed was a Water Care 1354 Ion Air Cat” iron filtration system. This unit uses air to oxidize and filter out the iron and features an O-Zone generator to keep the media bed sanitized each regeneration. The third unit is a Water Care 1054 “Care Soft Elite” water softener that addresses the hardness in the water and provides soft luxurious water throughout the house. All of these units are equipped with a Wifi monitoring app that will notify the customer and us if any of the units detect an issue or improper operation. Finally, we installed an ultraviolet disinfection system to ensure that the entire house is protected from any harmful bacteria if it were to infiltrate the aquifer.

The customer, tired of the issues and not satisfied with the quality of the water wanted us to provide options for a system that would be more reliable, provide better water quality, and be sized properly to accommodate the large gatherings. In addition, he was highly concerned with making sure that the water was safe for him and his family to use and consume.

The challenge was designing a system that would meet the occasionally large demands without the need for very large and very expensive light commercial equipment. We solved this problem by designing a system that used several residential-sized units to take the place of each large commercial unit. This not only allowed for higher flow rates but also was substantially less expensive.

After discussing the water quality issues, the options for addressing each issue, and the features of the proposed equipment, the customer quickly approved the project and was eager to perform the work.

We proceeded to install two backwashing Turbidex sediment fitters to filter out the large amounts of sediment. That was followed up with two backwashing iron filters that oxidize and then filter out the problematic iron. We then installed a twin series water softener to remove the hardness and protect the rest of his plumbing system and appliances. And lastly, we installed an ultraviolet disinfection system to protect from harmful bacteria.

After installing and starting up the new system. We then proceeded to shock and flush out all of the plumbing system to disinfect and remove any residual problematic water.

The system has been operational for over a year now and the customer is so pleased with the quality of water, equipment, and service that J.R. Snider now maintains all aspects of his plumbing system from well pump to septic and everything in between.

When Mr. R. built his dream home he pulled out all the stops. He wanted to build a home that would be a destination location that his entire family would enjoy visiting for years to come. His plan is to relocate to this beautiful property upon retiring. While he remained working this house would be primarily used as a weekend/vacation home and for family gatherings.

As such he had top of the line systems installed that would be more reliable and lessen headaches from popping up when the property was being used. Unfortunately the water treatment system that was originally installed did not meet the same standards as the rest of the systems. This system did not seem to properly address the issues in the water and had continuous issues. In addition, the company that the builder had used to install the system was not local and began to show resistance in continually traveling so far to make the necessary repairs.

It was during one of these major malfunctions we were first introduced to the customer. A component of the system malfunctioned and began flooding the mechanical room one Saturday. Unable to reach the installer, he began searching for someone that could provide him with the quality of equipment and level of service that he valued so dearly.

After receiving Mr. R.’s plea for help, our Field Manager and Water Treatment Expert Brad Drawdy quickly arrived to assess the situation. After isolating the leak and stopping the flooding we proceeded to evaluate the system. After performing a water analysis we learned that in addition to the system being undersized for the large demand, it also did not address several of the issues with the quality of the water.

We faced some challenges on this install, the old barn was structurally sound however nothing was level, square, or plumbed in. Our installers needed to install fifty feet of gas piping along the outer wall of the barn and doing so while making the install look good was a challenge. If the pipe was fastened directly to the barn the piping would snake in and out with the bowing and curvature of the walls. We decided to use a surveyor's level to determine level grade and then stretched a string line out to establish straightness to eliminate curvature within the sight planes of the piping. All our water piping was installed so as to drain via gravity should the tack room need to be winterized. Propane gas bottles were already on-site and we decided to install a tankless gas water heater for safety reasons as the combustion chamber is enclosed and there is no standing pilot light. Fire concerns are very real when working and installing fixtures and appliances in barns. A hot and cold mixing hose bib was installed just outside the tack room. A laundry sink with hot and cold water was installed in the tack room. Mr. F is very pleased his staff now has an enclosed area in which to wash horses.

Mr. F. had a neat old barn with plenty of horse stalls and the staff had been washing horses outside in the weather. Mr. F. asked to meet with us to discuss the feasibility of installing a wash stall. A job site visit resulted in us finding a way to convert an existing horse stall to a wash stall and converting a horse tack room into an area where all the piping and the water heater as well as a wash sink would reside.

Our technician was determined to find out why this happened so he performed a water pressure test on the home. The water pressure test revealed excessive pressure on the water supply system, the existing pressure reducing valve located in a different area of the house had failed and was allowing the high water pressure to enter the home possibly leading to the water heater tank failure. We proposed and installed a new water heater with a new thermal expansion tank as well as a new pressure reducing valve. Mr. F. was pleased that we correctly resolved the issue he called us about and thanked us for being so thorough and finding and correcting the underlying cause of the problem.

Mr. F. called us to his home because he believed the thermal expansion tank on his water heater was leaking and he wanted a quote to replace it. Upon arrival our technician performed a thorough inspection of the water heater and the nearby piping. Upon examination we found the water puddling on the top of the water heater was coming from the water heater tank itself and not the piping, the gas water heater flue collar had developed a crack and water was seeping out around the flue.

Our technicians then replaced the failed portion of the wiring and fully tested the well pump for proper operation before dropping the well pump back into the well. Upon startup of the pump out technicians noticed that water pressure was inadequate and determined that water was flowing somewhere on the farm. An exhaustive search of the farm resulted in us finding a toilet that was running wide open which we repaired. Our technicians continued to notice a loss of water at a rate of approximately two gallons per minute. Again our technicians were able to isolate the dependencies from the water source and determined that the water line going to one particular home (when turned off) stopped the flow of water. Again, our technicians went on a leak search and located an underground leak on the water line feeding that particular structure which we promptly excavated and repaired. A less thorough diagnosis of the entire situation would have surely resulted in either a dry well situation or a failed well pump or both. Mrs. G. thanked our technicians for being so thorough and was pleased we didn’t just turn the water on and leave her with problems that would manifest themselves later with an unfavorable outcome.

Mrs. G. called us out because she had no water anywhere on the farm. Upon arrival our technicians quickly determined the entire farm was served by one well and they determined that the well pump in that well was not pumping. Our technicians performed an electrical diagnostic on the wiring leading from the wellhead to the pump located two hundred feet deep within the well. The diagnostic results lead us to believe the well pump wiring was either severed or the pump motor gad failed. After pulling the well pump our technicians performed an inch by inch inspection of all two hundred feet of the well pump wiring and located broken wires about six feet above the pump. Our technicians determined the well pump was only five years old and deemed replacement of the pump not necessary.
